Spring update (In collaboration with Sainsbury’s Home)

Hello there!

With Spring officially just around the corner, our living area in Rose Cottage was in much need of a refresh!  As we spend the majority of our time in this room, I like to change it up every season.  We try to keep it cosy and inviting, with everything having a country cottage theme as far as possible.  When I first saw the press release for the new Sainsbury’s Home Spring/Summer 2019 range- I knew it would fit Rose Cottage perfectly!  The products pay homage to Springtime with their delicate, hand-painted floral designs and pretty pastel colours.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This is my favourite corner of the living area and is the perfect spot to get comfy on to read a magazine or catch up on some TV.  I picked up 2 throws from the new Sainsbury’s Home range.  Firstly, I added some warmth to our otherwise neutral decor, with a blush pink throw hanging it over the arm of the chair.  The other grey pom pom throw was draped down the middle of the chair – this one is super cosy and is perfect to wrap up in for the cooler Spring evenings.  I also added a neutral cushion which is really versatile and could be used throughout any season.

This little tray would be perfect to serve treats on to your Spring guests or else to serve breakfast in bed (cough, cough Hubby).  Also how pretty is this little cup and saucer with matching plate? They have a full range of this crockery which comes in white, pale grey and dark grey.  I think they would be lovely as a set with a mixture of each colour.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Faux flowers are the perfect Spring addition to your home to bring the outdoors in. Sainsbury’s new range have a large selection of really life like flowers in cute little jugs and jars for any price point.

For me, accessories are the key items for really making a house a home.  They are also the cheapest option for changing up a room.  Frames, candles, peg boards, reed diffusers and potpourri are only a few of the items available in the range.

Your local Sainsbury’s would love a visit! Head there now to check out this stunning range and let me know how you’ve updated your home for Spring!

Hope you enjoyed reading, as much as I enjoyed writing!

Creating a Tranquil Bedroom

Hello there!

If you’ve been reading my newsletter you’ll know that since the start of the year I have been attempting to do a wardrobe challenge. This involved me filling a rail with clothing so that I could see what I had worn; as great as this has been for encouraging me to do a massive clear out, it resulted in our bedroom being full of clutter and was stressing me out!! With life throwing a few curve balls lately, more than ever at Rose Cottage we’ve needed a calm and relaxing place for us to soak up some much needed ‘me’ time.  For most people this room would be the bedroom – somewhere to completely unwind after a stressful day.  Over the past few weeks I have came to realise the importance of this room and put some love into it in the hope it will love me right back!!

So, here’s what i’ve been up to –

Making my bed every morning.

There is nothing makes me feel more put together than when i’ve made the bed (and added the extra 20 ‘just for show’ cushions!!!).  I fling open the window, leave the covers back for a little while to air the bed, then put all the covers and cushions into place.  I think this little simple task can really set the tone for your day and help encourage you to plough through all the other jobs you need to do.  I also give the bed a good spray with softner mix (a Mrs Hinch tip) to freshen it up and give it that just washed feel. Plus at the end of the day when your crawling back in how much better does it feel to get into a bed that has been made?!

Keeping it tidy.

‘A tidy room equals a tidy mind’ – isn’t that the popular saying?!  I have been really trying to put everything back where it belongs after I use it, and every couple of days running the hoover and duster around.  To my complete shock even the hubby has commented on how good the room has been looking (I checked his pulse don’t worry!) – now just to do the same in the rest of Rose Cottage!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Adding scent.

So as well as spraying the softner mix, as mentioned above, I like to spray my pillows and the top of the duvet with Pillow spray.  I’ve found this has really helped relax me, especially when I’m struggling to get over to sleep.  I have also added a candle and some fresh flowers to my bedside table – my new moto is ‘life’s too short not to burn your expensive candles!’

Invest in good quality bedding.

Thankfully my hubby works in this industry so we have been sleeping like royalty for a while now (!!!); but honestly if you haven’t bought good pillows and a duvet, put it top of your shopping list and thank me later! It is life changing, will save you money in the long run as they will last you so much longer and you will sleep like a champion!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

And lastly, something I haven’t done (yet!!!) – Redecorate.

Get yourself lost on Pinterest for a few hours and create a board of bedroom inspo.  Look for rooms which are calm and muted rather than loud and in your face.  What you find relaxing will be totally different to me, but thats the beauty of Pinterest – there’s something on there for everyone’s taste.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

If you have any more tips I’d really love to hear them.  I’m hoping to sleep from now until I write another blog post so see you then!!

Hope you enjoyed reading, as much as I enjoyed writing!

6 Christmas Table Settings

Hi there!

For our next instalment of The 12 days of Christmas countdown at Rose Cottage we are showing you 6 table settings!

I can think of no one better than the gorgeous Laura Jane from The Homely Haven to show you all her amazing ideas…

Hello! I’m Laura J from The Homely Haven and I’ve been asked to write a guest blog by Jill on a few ideas for your Christmas table, as part of Rose Cottage’s 12 day of Christmas!

Its not long to the big day now, and i’m sure your head is filled with 101 things to get done… I know mine definitely is!

I always love to make our table a little special at Christmas, but not too over the top that the table styling takes longer than making the food!

These ideas are simple and can also be changed and adapted to suit the colours that you have chosen for your theme this year…you do have a theme don’t you??

I’ve played it safe and chosen to style a white dinner set 6 ways as most of us as a white dinner set knocking about our kitchen.

So here goes…

ONE:

If you don’t want to pay for new place-mats for Christmas, simply wrap your current place-mats in a festive (or even brown paper) paper and you’ve instantly changed the look of your table! If you are a Cath Kidston or Emma Bridgewater fan, this is a brilliant way to incorporate the design on a budget. To finish the look, I have simply added a piece of holly (to match the design of the paper) a little place name tied with a beautiful velvet ribbon and the napkin tied with a simple knot. TOP TIP: turn your place-mat vertical rather than horizontal to gain much needed space around the table!

TWO:

How cute is this little stocking! I found these in Home Bargains for 69p for six. They are a complete bargain and so, so fun for your Christmas table, even if you just use them for the kiddies place-settings! There is lots of leftover room for the odd chocolate coin as well!. I tied mine with a little bit of candy candy twine to hold it together a little more.

The little place name holder is simply made with three candy canes, melted together to form a little holder, you could use larger ones to create a more dramatic effect.

TOP TIP: this is a fabric place mat, but I have cut it in half! great way to save the pennies (and space on the table).

THREE:

Keeping with the traditional red and white theme, This is a more adult version of the Christmas stocking idea.

I have created a little napkin pocket and simply finished with coordinating ribbon and a little Christmas wooden star with an initial stamped on.

TOP TIP: a little matching pillow box with the guests favourite sweet is always a lovely finishing touch.

FOUR:

This is the simplest of all. Fold your napkin into quarters length way and place under your plate/bowl and have hanging over the edge of the table. Simple yet elegant. I have finished with a wooden handmade Christmas decoration, but they equally make a beautiful place setting and then the guest can keep for their tree next year! TOP TIP: always set your table with your plates/bowls as it gives a much more dramatic effect to the table.

FIVE:

Change it up with your cutlery! I’ve invested in gold cutlery for this years Christmas table (complete design still not decided on, but white plate and gold cutlery are certain). This look would also be perfect for a new years day meal because its quite glam with the black/gold look. I’ve simply tied the cutlery together and set on the plate (finished with a little bauble and a gold leaf luggage tag) and finished with a knotted napkin. TOP TIP: instead of place mats, invest in some charger plates. You can find them in loads of high street shops and for as little as £1 a plate.

SIX:

Embracing nature with this one. Keeping it plain and simple for the last table setting. A Pine cones and pine branch keeping it real and simply Christmas. The pine cone also works well as a place name holder. TOP TIP: If you don’t wan’t or have time) to faff about with your napkins…a simple napkin ring will do the trick! Try to choose one that will work with different colours and styles. I choose ones that match my place-mats.

And that’s a wrap folks!. Hope you’ve enjoyed these festive styling tips. Nothing fancy or too complicated, just a few ideas to help bring your Christmas table to life (especially if you aren’t that great a cook).

Love Laura xo

October Round Up

Hi there!
We had the busiest September ever (family wedding in Lake Garda, trip to London and few days in Donegal for my Mum’s 60th) so am looking forward to a much slower paced October. Bring on lighting the candles, walks in crunchy leaves and chunky knits!!
What I’m wearing…

This month I’m talking Supermarket style…
How far has clothing in the Supermarkets came?! Long gone are the days of basic filled aisles with budget buys…we now have high end fashion available alongside our bread and milk.
The demand for stand out, bang on trend, must have pieces is high and the supermarkets have answered! Above I have shown a few of my faves…
The first 2 photos show skirts which I got from Tesco, both priced at £22. These are so versatile and can be easily dressed up or down. The same can be said for the dress in photo 3; This was a complete steal at £18 from Asda.
So what are you all waiting for?? Next time your doing a shop, take a few minutes to check the clothing, pick up a bargain and let me know so I can too!!

Where I’m wandering…

Glenveagh National Park…
As part of my Mum’s 60th Birthday celebrations, my Dad hired a house out in Donegal for a week. This cottage was right on the door step of Glenveagh National Park and wow…what a beautiful place! It is definitely a must see for anyone visiting Donegal. Although we got completely battered by the elements, it didn’t take away from the amazing scenery! The walk to the castle is a tough one, especially if your pushing a pram, but there is a little shuttle bus if needed (at a cost of 3 Euro).
The park has free entry, free parking, a cafe and a tearoom…what’s not to love??!

Why I’m writing…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This month I want to focus on stories…

I talked all about the algorithm last month, so this month I want to tell you how can work well with our ‘friend’ the algorithm through stories.
Stories are an amazing corner of instagram where you are encouraged to show your “real” life with photos or videos which only last 24 hours. They are a fantastic way to connect with your followers and accounts like Mrs Hinch have really showed the growing power behind them!
When it comes to stories…start to think outside the norm; be experimental about the content your creating on them. They don’t need to be perfected or as well thought out as your main feed – but that doesn’t mean they can’t add value.
So the first thing to do to get going on stories is:
Watch how others are using stories and think about – what do I like/dislike about them? Why do I continuously watch this person’s stories? Are there any ideas I could use on my own? Have I ever DM’ed this person because of their stories and why?
Now you’ve thought about these, it’s time to get in front of the camera!! As the sweat drips down your back at the thought of this (!!!!), ignore it and turn on the casual chat. Introduce yourself, ask a question, give a recommendation or review and show the mess!
If I can give you any advice at gaining confidence and improving engagement on stories it would be:
– Be concise.
Don’t make what can be said in 2 stories last 10. People are turned off by lengthy chats.
– Time and practice.
It will get better and easier with both of these.
– Add value.
Have a purpose, what are your audience taking away from your stories?
– Use all tools available.
Cater for all your followers, use text as some may be deaf, or watch in work.
Use appropriate GIFs, music, polls, questions etc to get people interested.

And that is all my waffle around stories! Please note I am definitely in no shape or form an expert but hope these will even give someone a little something to think about!

Hope to speak to you soon!

September Round Up

Hi there,
and welcome to my first monthly round up!
I’m hoping to keep the topics roughly the same each month, talking about all things fashion, being out and about and growing your social media presence.
If this sounds up your street, then I’ll stop waffling and get going!

What I’m wearing…

I’ve been noticing lately on Social Media, people feeling the pressure to keep up with the latest trends and buying a new wardrobe with every Season. Please please please don’t feel the need to do this!! Take a look inside your wardrobe and try to be creative with what you already own. The outfits I’ve put together above are using 3 Summer pieces from my wardrobe – a denim dress, a strappy top and a denim skirt.
Here are a few tips to bring your wardrobe along with you skipping into Autumn:
– Polo necks are great for teaming with skirts/shorts or putting under/over dresses.
– Add a basic tee under your strappy summer tops for a bit more coverage in the chilly weather.
– Knee high boots are perfect for skin coverage and to give you that extra bit of heat!
I would love to hear if you have any more tips for re-styling your current wardrobe, and let me know how you’ve been shopping your own wardrobe!

Where I’m wandering…

We recently discovered a little local gem of a spot thanks to my Sister… Bangor’s Castle and Walled Garden
This beautiful garden is perfect for little ones to safely run around the stone paths while you can take in the stunning surroundings! There are lots of picnic benches and also a small play park just outside the walls (which is perfect bribery to finish your trip!!). It would also be lovely for a child-free walk as there are plenty of photo opportunities perfect for the ‘gram!
With the added bonus of free entry, lots of parking and a small cafe on site…what’s not to love??

Why I’m writing…

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I thought I’d use this section to share some tips on how you can improve your social media presence and in particular Instagram. I’m definitely in no shape or form any kind of expert, so anything thing I share here is something I’m going to work on implementing myself too!

This month I want to focus on the algorithm…

More than ever before, quality content is key; And when I talk about content I mean images, captions, stories, live streams etc etc… Everything you share is content and putting maximum effort into creating something which is finger stopping and thumb clicking is vital for growth and engagement these days.
I don’t know about you, but I can hardly say algorithm never mind understand it!! But, whether you love or hate it, the best thing you can do for your feed is learn to get along with it!!
If you think your engagement is low, don’t sit and complain about the algorithm and re-post silly images about 7% of people seeing posts (falling down the algorithm black hole)…put the effort into ‘pulling one of out the bag’. Create content that will stop your followers in their tracks and force them to engage. Remind people why they clicked the follow button and place yourself back on their home feeds – remind the algorithm that people want to see your content!
I would love you to push yourself outside your comfort zone and get super creative! Go on…give it a go and let me know how you get on and if it helps!
I so welcome anyone who may be struggling creatively to get in touch…I’d love you help you out!

Hope to speak to you soon!

Baby’s Kitchen Cupboard Organisation

Hello there!

Hope you are all well? Thought I would write a blog post about how I have got myself organised to best cater for little Harry’s eating.  If you’re a parent, you will know how stressful it can become when your wee one is crying looking fed and you’re flapping about trying to get bottles made/ food prepared!  I think the key to avoiding this is preparation and organisation.

Firstly, I cleared a cupboard in the kitchen and dedicated it solely to Harry.  I then bought some storage baskets to put his bits and pieces in.  You can find the baskets here: http://www.lakeland.co.uk/23881/Small-Faux-Rattan-Storage-Basket

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The bottom shelf has sterilised bottles on the left, baby rice and porridge in the middle and formula on the right.  This formula is the opened one which I am currently using.

The middle shelf has a basket full of spoons, bowls and bibs.  And another basket with food pouches for handiness when out and about.  (Just a quick side note – become a friend to Ella’s Kitchen here for a cute little weaning starter pack: https://www.ellaskitchen.co.uk/become-a-friend/ )

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The top shelf has spare formula; I would recommend keeping a spare tin or two to avoid panic if it runs out!  And a basket with medical supplies, and cups.

I hope these simple organisation tips have been helpful! If you have any more I would love to hear them!

Hope you enjoy reading, as much as I enjoy writing!

Jill
